About
Loomrate
An independent set of free pricing calculators for people who bill their own time.
Last updated July 21, 2026
Loomrate started from a specific, unglamorous problem: freelancers quote a number, feel fine about it, and only discover months later that the work did not pay. Not because the rate was obviously low, but because the quote counted the hours that were invoiced and ignored the ones that were not - the revisions, the scoping calls, the invoice chasing, the tax that was never set aside.
What it does
Loomrate turns a project fee into the number that actually matters: what you keep per hour actually worked, after tax reserves, platform commission, overhead, and unpaid time. Around that core sit a set of single-purpose tools - salary-to-hourly conversion, day-rate conversion, quarterly tax estimates, freelance-versus-employee comparison - and 20 profession rate guides for checking your number against the wider market.
How it works
- It runs in your browser. The calculators are client-side. Your figures are not uploaded, and the free tools do not require an account.
- The reasoning is published. Every formula and every benchmark source is documented on the methodology page rather than presented as a black box.
- Bands, not averages. Rate guides show ranges and what moves you through them, because a single average is the least useful number in pricing.
What it deliberately is not
- Not financial or tax advice. Loomrate does arithmetic on numbers you supply. Tax rates, deductions, and entity structure are specific to your situation - an accountant is the right person for those.
- Not a rate survey. The benchmark bands are synthesised from public sources, and the methodology page says exactly which and what that limits.
- Not a marketplace. Loomrate does not take a cut of your work, place you with clients, or hold your invoices.
How Loomrate makes money
The core calculators and every rate guide are free and stay free. Revenue comes from two places, stated plainly so you can weigh it: an optional paid tier that unlocks advanced features in the main calculator - saved project history, client profitability analytics, CSV and PDF export - and affiliate commissions on some of the products listed under recommended tools, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not influence the rate benchmarks, which are assembled independently of any commercial arrangement.
Corrections and contact
The rate bands are the part most likely to be wrong for any individual field, and corrections from people working in them are the most useful input there is. If a band does not match what you see in your market - particularly if you have real data behind it - that is worth sending. Reach the site through the contact route listed on the homepage.
Start with a real project
The fastest way to see whether your pricing works is to put a project you have already delivered through the calculator and compare the result to what you assumed you earned.
