What actually moves a translator's rate
Language pair scarcity
Rates are set by supply. Common pairs into English compress hard; low-resource pairs and into-language work by native speakers in small markets hold much higher rates.
Liability and certification
Legal, medical, and sworn translation carry professional risk, and the price reflects the accountability rather than the difficulty.
Machine-translation post-editing
MTPE is now a separate, lower-priced product. Accepting MTPE rates for full translation work - or vice versa - is the most common pricing error in the field.
Transcreation
Marketing copy that must work culturally, not literally, is a creative service and should be billed hourly or by project, never per source word.
Pricing mistakes that cost translators the most

What is a good per-word translation rate?
General translation commonly runs $0.08-$0.16 per word, technical and medical work $0.16-$0.30, with certified documents often priced per page at $25-$75. Convert whichever you are offered into an hourly figure before accepting - dense source text can halve your effective rate.
How do I convert a per-word rate to an hourly rate?
Divide your realistic output in words per hour into the total fee. If you translate 500 words an hour at $0.12 per word, that is $60/hour before any unpaid research, formatting, or revision time - which is exactly the gap a true-rate calculation exposes.
Should I accept machine translation post-editing work?
Only at a rate that reflects the actual effort. Poor machine output can take longer to fix than translating from scratch. Review a sample before agreeing a per-word MTPE rate, and price full retranslation separately when the output warrants it.
Do translators charge a minimum fee?
Most experienced translators do - commonly the equivalent of 250-500 words. Short jobs carry the same file handling, terminology checking, and invoicing overhead as long ones, and without a minimum they are reliably unprofitable.
