Freelance Web Developer
Hourly Rate in 2026
What web developers actually charge - by experience level, by project, and what you need to charge to hit your own income target.
Last reviewed July 21, 2026 · US market
Web development rates are set almost entirely by what breaks if you get it wrong. A marketing site rebuild and a payments integration take comparable hours and price three times apart, because one costs a client a bad week and the other costs them revenue and a compliance problem.
Freelance web developer rates by experience level
| Experience | Hourly band | Typical work |
|---|---|---|
| Entry - 0-2 years | $30-$60 | Template builds, WordPress, small fixes |
| Mid - 3-6 years | $65-$110 | Custom front-end + API integration |
| Senior - 7+ years | $110-$175 | Architecture, performance, team lead |
| Niche specialist | $150-$300 | Payments, infra, security, migrations |
Median across the field: $85/hour. Bands describe what independent web developers bill clients in the US market - not salary equivalents. How these figures are built.
What you need to charge to hit your income goal
Market bands tell you what is normal. They do not tell you what works for you - that depends on your expenses, your tax rate, and how much of your week is actually billable. Fill in your own numbers:

| Third-party API integration | $2,500 - $15,000 |
| Ongoing maintenance retainer | $1,000 - $6,000/mo |
What actually moves a web developer's rate
Blast radius
Price the consequence, not the commit. Touching checkout, auth, or data migration justifies a materially higher rate than touching a landing page, and clients who understand the risk expect to pay it.
Stack scarcity
Generalist React work is priced by a deep global supply pool. Legacy migrations, Rails-to-anything ports, payment-processor work, and anything with a compliance surface have a much thinner bench and hold rates well above the generalist band.
Who owns the spec
If the client hands you a written spec you are a builder. If you produce the spec you are a consultant, and the discovery phase is billable work that also lets you scope the build accurately instead of guessing.
Support expectations
A build with an implicit "just ping me when something breaks" tail is a retainer nobody is paying for. Naming a support window and pricing anything past it is worth several points of effective rate.
Pricing mistakes that cost web developers the most
- Fixed-bidding a project before discovery, then absorbing every ambiguity as unpaid scope.
- Letting "quick fixes" from past clients fill the calendar at no charge and crowd out billable work.
- Ignoring the unpaid hours in estimating, proposals, and code review - for most developers this is 25-35% of the working week.
Each of these shows up the same way: a rate that looks fine on paper and a bank balance that disagrees. The project calculator exposes the gap by pricing the unpaid hours alongside the billed ones.

What should a freelance web developer charge per hour?
In the US market, $65-$110/hour is the standard mid-level band, with senior developers at $110-$175 and specialists in payments, infrastructure, or security regularly clearing $200. Rates below $40/hour generally mean competing directly with offshore marketplace supply.
How do I quote a website project instead of billing hourly?
Estimate the build in hours, add a contingency for the parts of the spec that are still vague, then multiply by your target rate and present a fixed price with an explicit scope boundary. The contingency is not padding - it is the price of carrying the risk the client would otherwise carry.
Is it worth raising my rate or working more hours?
Raising the rate, nearly always. Hours are capped and non-billable overhead grows with volume, so a 20% rate increase adds more take-home than a 20% hours increase while leaving capacity for higher-value work. Model both against your real billable hours before deciding.
How much should I charge for website maintenance?
Monthly maintenance retainers commonly run $1,000-$6,000 depending on traffic, stack complexity, and response-time commitments. Price the availability, not just the expected work - a guaranteed 24-hour response has a real cost even in months when nothing breaks.

How we built these numbers. Bands are US-market estimates synthesised from public salary aggregators, marketplace rate data, and published industry pricing surveys, then cross-checked against typical project fees. They describe what independent freelancers bill clients, and they are wide on purpose - experience, niche, location, and client type move real rates more than any single average suggests.
